Datzelfde jaar sloeg echter de Grote Depressie toe, waardoor veel kerkleden werkloos raakten. De kerk had daardoor moeite om aan haar financiële verplichtingen, zoals de hypotheek, te voldoen. Pastoor Flynn zag een week lang af van zijn salaris en slaagde erin de bank te overtuigen de rente te verlagen van 2% naar 1,5%. Ondanks dat hield de kerk aan het einde van het jaar slechts $2,11 over. Dankzij fairs, giften en legaten kon de hypotheek uiteindelijk in 1948 worden afgelost.

De plannen voor deze kerk in Tudor-gotische stijl werden ontworpen door W. J. Van der Meer, een architect uit Rockford. De oorspronkelijke kerk was geïnspireerd op de vroege zendingsstijl en had gewelfde, donkere cipressenpilaren, vloeiende lijnen met ramen en deuren in Normandische stijl, ramen met traliewerk en met de hand gesneden steenornamenten zoals fleur-de-lis en gotische traceries. De torenspits was gemodelleerd naar een voorbeeld uit het twaalfde-eeuwse Parijs. De kerk werd in 1929 gebouwd, maar in 1959 werd het gebouw verlaten ten gunste van het huidige kerkgebouw.

For one dollar, a person could “buy” a stone used in the church’s construction and have it signed with their name.

However, that same year, the Great Depression struck, causing many church members to lose their jobs. As a result, the church struggled to meet its financial obligations, including the mortgage payments. Pastor Flynn waived his salary for a week and succeeded in convincing the bank to reduce the interest rate from 2% to 1.5%. Despite this, the church ended the year with only $2.11 to spare. Thanks to fairs, donations, and bequests, the mortgage was finally paid off in 1948.

The plans for this Tudor-Gothic style church were designed by W. J. Van der Meer, an architect from Rockford. The original church was inspired by early missionary style and featured vaulted dark cypress pillars, flowing lines with Norman-style windows and doors, stained glass with tracery, and hand-carved stone ornaments such as fleur-de-lis and Gothic traceries. The steeple was modeled after one from twelfth-century Paris. The church was built in 1929, but in 1959 the building was abandoned in favor of the current church.
