Saint Vincent Orphanage

" In 1922 an addition was built and in 1929 an approval was given for an expenditure of $3,000,000 for six new buildings, a new power house, a baby house and nursery, an executive building, a church, an old peoples home and gymnasium. The buildings were to be brick and fire proof.

This was a big step in the history of St Vicent’s and St Joseph’s for this building program, under Bishop Edward Hoban, had been a heart breaking task, coming as it did during the depression.

Nearly 10,000 people attended the services at the dedication of these buildings “to childhood to old age” in July 1931. Archbishop Mundelein of Chicago and Bishop Edward Hoban of the Rockford Diocese spoke and the music was by the St Vicent’s Band under the direction of Karl Hoffman. The officials were greeted by Edward Jansen, one of the resident boys and two little girls Joanna Francis and Veronica Mason presented flowers to the prelates. The flag was raised by Dr. Karl B. Rieger, past commander of the Freeport Post of the American Legion."
